Translating the Heart Sutra

A linguistic and spiritual journey through the Heart Sutra's Classical Chinese text — examining how character selection and poetic structure convey the Buddhist teaching that form and emptiness are not separate, but interdependent. From the Five Aggregates to Prajna Paramita, the sutra distills the entirety of Mahāyāna wisdom into a few hundred characters.

The sutra also inspired 色空訣 (Sè kōng jué, Canon of Form and Emptiness) — a guqin composition from the 1625 Taiyin Xisheng handbook. Its composer, Chen Dabin, "often chanted this sutra without end, but now entrusted it to the silk strings of guqin, contemplating the words to convey a message beyond words." The piece divides the sutra into seven sections plus a coda, with angular melodic leaps spanning three octaves — more hymn than chant. Having studied guqin and illustrated its methods, the connection between this text and the instrument feels deeply personal — both demand a kind of stillness, a willingness to sit with what cannot be said.
